MechanicText privacy policy

Effective: October 18, 2026 · mechanictext.com

1. Who we are and what this policy covers

MechanicText collects only what it needs to connect Massachusetts drivers with local garages, and never sells your information.

MechanicText ("we", "us") runs the website mechanictext.com. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, who sees it, and the choices you have. It applies to drivers who request help, people who leave reviews, and garages that ask to be listed.

The short version:

  • You give us a few details about your car problem and how to reach you, and we confirm your email with a one-time code.
  • When you tap Text or Call, your own phone sends the message or places the call. On desktop, you can also use Copy Message to copy the prepared message instead of sending a text directly. We never send texts for you, and we never see your conversation with the garage.
  • We keep a record of each request and which garages you select through Text, Call, or Copy Message. All three actions are recorded so we can run the service and show garages how many customers they get from us.
  • Your access to garage results lasts for 24 hours. After that period, you must answer the questions again to access garage results and receive a new reference number.
  • We do not sell your personal information or use it for targeted ads.
  • You can ask us to delete your information at any time by emailing support@mechanictext.com.

2. Information we collect

What we collect depends on how you use the site.

Who What we collect Where it comes from
Drivers making a request What's wrong with the car, make, model and optional year, ZIP code, urgency, name, email, phone number You type it into the request form
Drivers making a request A reference number (for example MT-1042) and the pre-written message we create from your answers We generate it
Drivers making a request Which garages you selected using Text, Call, or Copy Message, the type of button clicked, and the date and time of each activity Recorded automatically when you click Text, Call, or Copy Message
Email confirmation Your email address, a one-time six-digit verification code (stored only in scrambled form), its expiration time, and the number of verification attempts You and our system
Email confirmation - temporary request information Your vehicle details, ZIP code, name, phone number, and other request form answers. This information is temporarily stored with your verification code until email confirmation and is deleted with the temporary record within 24 hours. You type it into the request form, and our system temporarily stores it during verification
Reviewers First name and last initial, email, star rating, service type, review text, date, and the related reference number You type it into the review form
Everyone IP address, browser and device type, pages visited, how you arrived at the site, and approximate location based on IP Collected automatically (see section 7)
Garages Business name, contact name, call and texting numbers, email, address, ZIP code, services, hours, description, photos, and the date the garage agreed to receive texts The garage, given to us in person or by phone, or through the Get Listed form
Temporary Information and Activity Tracking

Customer answers submitted through the request form are temporarily stored alongside the email verification code until the customer confirms their email address. The temporary verification record and its associated information are deleted within 24 hours.

MechanicText also records Text, Call, and Copy Message interactions, including the selected garage, action performed, and activity timestamp.

The 24-hour deletion period applies to temporary verification records, not necessarily to confirmed requests or separately retained activity records.

3. What we don't collect

  • Your text conversations with garages. Texts are sent from your phone's own messaging app. They never pass through MechanicText, so we cannot read or store them.
  • Your phone calls. Calls go straight from your phone to the garage.
  • Payment details. MechanicText is free for drivers and we take no payments on the site.
  • Passwords. Drivers do not create accounts.
  • Government ID numbers, such as Social Security numbers. Please don't include them in any form or review.

4. How we use information

We use your information to run MechanicText and for nothing unrelated to it.

  • To connect you with garages: matching your ZIP code to nearby garages and writing the message that opens on your phone or can be copied on desktop.
  • To confirm you're a real person: sending your email code and running an invisible bot check on our forms.
  • To keep you informed: emailing you a confirmation with your answers and reference number.
  • To run the service: letting the site owner see each request, follow up on problems, and keep private notes.
  • To show garages their results: counting how many Text, Call, and Copy Message actions each garage receives. Garages may see these counts and monthly lead reports. Reports show numbers and dates, not your name or contact details.
  • To request feedback about your experience: approximately 3 days after you contact a garage using Text or Call, we send a one-time "How did it go?" follow-up email. This email includes a review link for each garage you contacted. Each review link remains valid for 30 days. The follow-up email is sent only once per request and is considered a service-related message, not a marketing email.
  • To manage reviews: confirming that a reviewer actually contacted the garage, and hiding spam or abusive reviews.
  • To improve the site: understanding which pages are used and where visitors come from.
  • To protect the service and follow the law: preventing abuse, fraud and spam, and responding to valid legal requests.

We won't send you marketing emails unless you've agreed to receive them. Every marketing email will include a way to unsubscribe.

5. When you text or call a garage

The garage gets your details only when you decide to contact it.

When you tap Text, your phone's messaging app opens with a message we've written from your answers: the car issue, make and model, ZIP code, urgency, your full name, and your reference number. You can edit or delete anything before you press send. Once sent, the garage will also see your phone number, because the text comes from your own phone.

If you're using a desktop computer, you can select Copy Message to copy the prepared message, which includes the same information. You can then paste it into your preferred messaging app or service and send it to the garage yourself. MechanicText does not automatically send the message on your behalf.

When you tap Call, your phone dials the garage, and the garage may see your number.

MechanicText records when you select Text, Call, or Copy Message, including which garage you selected and when the action occurred. However, we do not send text messages for you or see your conversations with the garage.

After that, your conversation is between you and the garage. Each garage is an independent business with its own privacy practices. MechanicText doesn't control what a garage does with information you give it directly.

6. Who we share information with

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.

We share it only in these cases:

  • Service providers that help us run the site. These include our web host, our email delivery provider [Developer to confirm], our bot-protection provider [Developer to confirm], and our analytics provider [Developer to confirm]. They may use your information only to provide their service to us.
  • Garages, through you. As explained in section 5, a garage receives your details only when you send the text, make the call, or choose to share the prepared message using Copy Message.
  • The public, for reviews. Published reviews show your first name, last initial, rating, service, review text and date. Your email is never shown.
  • Legal reasons. We may disclose information if required by law, a court order or a valid government request, or to protect people's safety or our legal rights.
  • If the business changes hands. If MechanicText is sold or merged, your information may transfer to the new owner, who must continue to protect it as this policy describes.

7. Cookies and analytics

We use a small number of cookies and similar browser storage technologies to keep the site working and to understand traffic.

  • Essential cookies and browser storage help keep your answers available while you complete the questions, keep your garage results accessible for 24 hours, and keep the site owner signed in to the dashboard. Your answers are maintained within the page while completing the questions, not stored in cookies. Your 24-hour access to garage results is maintained using your browser's local storage, while the dashboard login uses a cookie.
  • Bot protection from [Developer to confirm] may check your browser to tell people apart from automated spam.
  • Analytics from [Developer to confirm] helps us understand how many people visit, which pages they view, and how they found us. You may be able to limit analytics tracking through your browser's cookie settings or the analytics provider's available opt-out tools.

We don't use advertising cookies, and we don't allow ad networks to track you on our site.

8. How long we keep information

9. How we protect your information

We use reasonable safeguards, though no website can promise perfect security.

  • The whole site uses HTTPS, so information is encrypted on its way to us.
  • Email codes are stored only in scrambled (hashed) form, expire after 10 minutes and work once.
  • Only the site owner and authorized helpers can access the dashboard. They sign in with strong passwords and two-step login.
  • We limit how many codes and wrong attempts each email can use, to block abuse.

If a security breach affects your personal information, we will notify you and the authorities as Massachusetts law requires.

10. Your choices and rights

You can ask us to see, correct or delete your information at any time, and we won't treat you differently for asking.

  • See your information: ask for a copy of what we hold about you.
  • Correct it: ask us to fix anything that's wrong.
  • Delete it: ask us to delete your requests, tap records and reviews. We may keep a minimal record if the law requires it.
  • Stop emails: unsubscribe from any non-essential email.
  • Limit cookies: block or delete cookies in your browser. Essential features may then stop working.

To make a request, email support@mechanictext.com from the address you used on MechanicText, so we can confirm it's you. We'll reply within 30 days. Depending on where you live, you may have more rights under your state's privacy law, and we will honor them as that law requires.

11. Children

MechanicText is meant for adults arranging car repairs. It isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, email support@mechanictext.com and we'll delete it.

12. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the effective date at the top. For significant changes, we'll also post a notice on the home page before the change takes effect.
